Shabbaaaaa, once an underground dancehall-influenced party, has evolved into what is now considered a global movement with online radio stations based in Los Angeles and London.
Now, the LA-based collective is joining the Apple Music family of shows with Shabbaaaaa Sound Radio. Episode one kicks off tomorrow with an exclusive interview with Buju Banton, via FaceTime, from his home in Kingston, Jamaica. The conversation reflects his thoughts on the current pandemic, his early years in music, popular culture today, the upcoming album, and his purpose as an artiste and individual.
Notably, Buju Banton has given very few interviews in the past year, and his fans are always eager to hear what he has to say.
The team also goes through his music catalogue together, picking their favourite tunes (both past and present). The Shabbaaaaa Sound Radio crew caps off the inaugural episode with a DJ mix featuring a melting pot of songs and music genres that fall within the dancehall-influenced realm.
Every two weeks, the crew, which includes Drewbyrd, Sean G, and Shacia Päyne Marley, spins a unique selection of sounds that capture the evolution of dancehall music – whether it’s Afrobeats, hip hop, world music, Latin music, reggae, house, or R&B. Each episode features a curated playlist alongside a host of live mixes that bring the party right to your home.
The Buju interview will be aired on Apple Music on Sunday, May 3, at 3 p.m. PST/6 p.m. EST.
