Bonus Electrical bounces back into growth after Covid cut revenues

Bonus Electrical Group has bounced back into growth, with sales up 11 per cent to £21.1 million.

Full year results for the Hull family firm saw a healthy increase in operating profit too, up from £277,846 to £1.55 million as it enters its second half century.

The group took a 28 per cent hit to its revenues during the first lockdown, with the financial year closing on June 30, 2020 down from 2019’s £26.5 million to £19 million.

It was a year that saw the Willerby superstore closed, just ahead of the pandemic, with the business going on to launch a new website, serving it from the national distribution centre and head office on Kingswood.

Latest figures documenting the uptick are for the period to June 30, 2021.

Shaun Boanas, third generation at the helm said in his strategic report accompanying the results: “During the last quarter of the prior year, the group was largely in shutdown due to Covid-19 so turnover was reduced substantially, and this has subsequently reversed in the current year.”

Staff numbers dropped from 134 to 109.

Bonus, the name behind the city’s arena and onc adorning the shirts of Hull City, launched in 1962.

From rented premises in Mytongate taken on by founder Eric Boanas, it had expanded to a site just off Hessle Road and then Blackfriargate, with son Trevor taking over, opting to focus on the Grange Park Lane location for the final 15 years as a bricks and mortar retailer.

He retains a 79 per cent ownership of the business, as the ultimate controlling party, and was presented with the Hull Live Business Awards Lifetime Contribution accolade back in November.

The Willerby site has been transformed into a trade park by fellow Hull firm Allenby Commercial.
