They say a picture is worth 1,000 words, well Marketing Humber’s latest resource gift to the region may stretch that some more.

The place promotion agency has launched a new visual tool to aid the Energy Estuary’s investment case, while easing the telling of a transformational story to all who need to hear it.

The Humber: A 2030 Vision for Industrial Decarbonisation pulled together the key projects that could make it a pioneer within the response to the global climate change emergency.

Developed in partnership with Catch, it takes in offshore wind, hydrogen production and carbon capture and storage, explaining the link and aiding the holistic view.

Bill Walker, chairman of Marketing Humber, launched it at this week’s Humber Decarbonisation Network meeting.

He said: “Marketing Humber created the term ‘The UK’s Energy Estuary’ The phrase quickly caught on and the illustrative map we developed to run alongside the resulting campaign continues to play an instrumental role in supporting policymakers, politicians, and the brilliant businesses at the front end of this essential, fast-changing sector, conveying a compelling, cohesive case to secure new investment.

“The Humber has achieved more than £40 billionn in industry investment in the past eight years, the bulk of it related to new approaches to energy production.

Bill Walker, new chair of Marketing Humber.

“We were thrilled when Catch and the Humber Industrial Cluster Plan team commissioned us to develop a new map illustrating the emerging story of the Humber at the global forefront of the transition to Net Zero.

“The new fact-filled map brings to life the Humber’s 2030 cluster plan vision and strengths, helping to drive the growth in investment and innovation.”

The huge plans have been back in the news this past week with the submissions to the cluster sequencing competition being run by government, with Equinor, SSE, Phillips 66 and VPI Immingham behind three major projects – H2H Saltend, Keadby Three Carbon Capture Power Station and Humber Zero.

Mr Walker said: “The Humber is undoubtedly leading the UK’s green industrial revolution, with ambitious targets to decarbonise our economy and create thousands of sustainable jobs. It is a trailblazer for clean energy generation and a global leader in smart offshore wind operations and maintenance.

“This new map comprehensively reflects that, detailing the key businesses, stakeholders, technologies, and the excellent deployment projects we have in the Humber. including Humber Zero, Gigastack, Zero Carbon Humber, V Net Zero and the Northern Endurance Partnership – with many more being added all the time.

“As the established powerhouse economy responsible for keeping the lights on across the country, our region is consequently by far the largest industrial CO2 emitter in the UK. It is also second only to London as the region most at risk of catastrophic flooding.

“This unique position means we have more to gain if we get this right – and more to lose if we don’t – than almost anywhere else. The Humber really has found its rightful place at the forefront of global thinking.”

Reiterating a line coined in the COP26 push, he added: “The world’s greatest threat is the Humber’s biggest opportunity!”
